A programme of art, culture and new infrastructure to reimagine the future of the UK’s biggest council housing estate

This Historical Archive showcases a range of material about the Becontree Estate from the Barking and Dagenham Archives and Local Studies Centre. They give a taste of the breadth of material available as well as insights into the Estate’s social and architectural history.

Collections relating to the Becontree Estate are some of the most popular and widely used in the Barking and Dagenham Archives. Here, it is possible to find information about all aspects of Becontree including the original designs, its green spaces, the experiences of its earliest residents, and the changes made as the estate evolved.

Barking and Dagenham Archives and Local Studies Centre collects, preserves and provides access to informational resources on the place and people of Barking and Dagenham, and is situated in the Visitor Centre at Valence House.

For more information about the full extent of the Becontree Estate collections visit Valence House Collections or contact the Archives Service directly via localstudies@lbbd.gov.uk / 020 8227 2033.
